How recycling works
Behind every answer is a real process: sorting at home, collection, and processing at Manitoba facilities. This is what it looks like across the province.

The number identifies the type of plastic, not whether you can recycle it. Most plastic packaging is accepted in Manitoba regardless of the number. The exceptions are black plastic, foam, flexible plastics like bags and squeeze tubes, and containers for certain hazardous products.
In most communities, no. It depends on how their recycling is processed because bags jam sorting equipment. The one exception is shredded paper, which goes in a clear, tied bag.
Leave lids and labels on plastic containers. Remove metal lids from glass containers and put them in your recycling separately.
Some things will need a quick rinse, others won't. It doesn't need to be dishwasher-clean. Just empty and free of food. Leftover food can prevent the container, and any paper or cardboard it leaks onto, from getting recycled.
Special Items
Electronics, batteries, paint cans, and a few other products are handled by separate programs.
