Fall Recycling Guide

Fall is here with the weather getting cooler and the leaves changing colour. We want to help you recycle right this season. Read on to find out what seasonal materials to put in your blue bin this Fall.

Fall Clean-up

There are more items that can be recycled, but not in your blue bin. Here are some tips:

• Donate gently used items in your home to a thrift store or secondhand shop.
• Diabetes Canada has a textile recycling program with various drop-off bins throughout the province. Find one near you on their website.
• Do a backyard cleanup and winterize your backyard. Check with your community to see if they collect yard waste as part of garbage and recycling pickup.
• The 4R Winnipeg Depots are a one-stop shop to recycle many items that aren’t accepted in your curbside blue bin. Visit the city’s website to learn more about what can be recycled at the depots.

Yard Waste

Check with your community to see if they do yard waste collection as part of recycling and garbage pickup. In Winnipeg, here is what’s accepted for collection:

• Branches
  • Branches must be less than 1 m in length and 10 cm in diameter
• Branches must be less than 1 m in length and 10 cm in diameter
• Bush/shrub clippings
• Fruit from your yard
• Grass clippings
• Flowers and plants
• Halloween pumpkins
  • Please remove any decorations and candles prior to recycling

As collection varies between communities, check with your local recycling processor to see what is accepted for yard waste.

Accepted Materials

Here is what’s accepted in your curbside recycling bin.

• Aluminum cans (i.e., Pop cans, energy drink cans)
• Boxboard (i.e., Cereal boxes, tissue boxes)
• Cardboard (i.e., Boxes of all sizes, take-out beverage trays)
• Cartons (i.e., Milk and soup cartons)
• Glass (i.e., Food jars, wine bottles)
• Paper (i.e., Flyers, newspapers)
• Plastic containers (i.e., Water bottles, laundry jugs)

Unaccepted Materials

Please do not place any of these items in your recycling bin.

• Aluminum foil, pie plates, and trays
• Batteries
• Black plastics
• Construction waste
• Dishes and ceramics
• Electronics
• Facial tissues, napkins
• Foam packaging (i.e., Styrofoam)
• Food waste
• Household Hazardous Waste (i.e., Aerosol cans, propane tanks, paint)
• Plastic film (i.e., Chip bags, plastic bags, plastic wrap)
• Toys
